Julio Meyer
My paintings went through a new development in the spring of 1999. In February of that year Donna, my wife, Alexander and
Zachary, our boys, and I went on a train ride on the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Seattle. We saw the “Van Gogh” show
In L.A. and the “Chuck Close Retrospective” in Seattle. We returned and I started a series of Monumental Portraits. These oil
on canvas paintings were of common southwest animals found along the Rio Grande Valley. I started painting in thick, vivid and
vibrant colors. Recurring themes in my art are family, Hispanic culture, southwest scenery, traditions, and science ( superstring theory). Painting with a fresh perspective the paintings reveal the
ordinary and unnoticed to be significant and extraordinary indeed. Bernadette Rodriguez & Judy Chicago, both of whom I’ve met since moving to Belen have inspired me. This series brings a visual dialogue into play through images of animals I grew up with as a child in a rural area of Alameda & the north valley of Albuquerque.
