Michael Murphy

   I love to paint New Mexico landscapes and cityscapes because I feel a strong, mystical connection to this land. The powerful yet peaceful beauty transforms everyday life into an encounter with the ones of the universe, which I strive to put on canvas. I want people to walk into my paintings, to feel the joy and awe that I feel. I hope they may re-enter their own world with a greater sense of peace and a commitment to give back to this land a nurturing respect.

Biography

Born in La Porte, Indiana, Michael has been a resident of Albuquerque for nearly his entire life. His bachelor's degree, with an emphasis on art and economics, is from the University of New Mexico.

Michael's background in the arts is varied and ranges from jewelry design to picture framing. At this stage of his career, he is able to paint nearly full-time. While he prefers the freedom of plein air painting, he also appreciates the intellectual aspects of studio work.

Devoted to New Mexico and its environs, Michael also looks forward to the day that he can resume traveling and painting less familiar landscapes and cityscapes as he has done in the past.
